Help people and search systems find a clear, accurate account of your business: what you offer, where you operate, who can use the service and how to contact you. Keep that information current on your pages and relevant business listings, check that the pages can be accessed, and measure inquiries alongside visibility. These steps create useful source material; they cannot guarantee that an AI service will mention, cite or recommend your business.

What appearing in AI search actually means
Separate the results you want to improve:
- Access: a crawler or person can retrieve a page.
- Indexing: a search engine has included the page in its searchable collection.
- Eligibility: the page meets a feature’s applicable requirements.
- Mention: an answer names the business, potentially without a link.
- Citation: an answer links to a source, which may be your website or someone else’s page.
- Referral: a reader follows a link to your site.
- Inquiry or sale: the visit results in a meaningful customer action.
Track these separately. A crawler request is not evidence of a recommendation, and a citation is not evidence of a booking. A directory’s citation also does not establish that every business on that page received attention.
Make your business information clear and consistent
Start with a factual master record: trading name, branch address or genuine service area, website, contact details, opening hours and booking route. Check those details against the places customers already encounter your business.
Use the real business name and an appropriate category in Google Business Profile. Its eligibility rules matter: an online-only business does not automatically qualify for a local profile, and service-area businesses must follow the rules that apply to their model. Do not create an invented storefront or add keywords to the name to manufacture relevance. Google Business Profile guidelines.
For a business with several branches, maintain a useful page for each real location. Explain the services and hours available there instead of implying that every branch provides the full company range. A delivery business should distinguish normal coverage from routes requiring a quote.
As an editorial recommendation, put conditions beside the claim they qualify. If a service is available only to account customers, say so alongside the service description. If a price excludes delivery, tax or installation, explain the basis. This helps a prospective customer understand the offer; it is not a documented formula for winning AI citations.
Help search systems access and understand the information
Google Search
Google says its usual SEO foundations apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. There is no special AI schema or mandatory AI text file. Important information should be available as text, linked from useful pages and consistent with structured data. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee selection. Google’s AI features documentation.
Ask the person responsible for your website to check blocked crawling, accidental noindex instructions, inaccessible pages and conflicting canonical URLs. Inspect the actual page in Search Console; being able to load it in your own browser is only one check.
Google’s current documentation also describes a Search generative AI control in Search Console settings. Check the relevant property and any inherited setting if you intend to participate. Excluding content from these generative features is distinct from removing a site from Search, and the control does not govern model training. Search generative AI control.
ChatGPT search
OpenAI distinguishes three agents. OAI-SearchBot supports ChatGPT search discovery; GPTBot concerns content that may be used for model training. These settings are independent. ChatGPT-User handles certain user-requested visits and does not determine search inclusion. If ChatGPT search visibility is your aim, have your technical provider check OAI-SearchBot access and the documented IP ranges without assuming that training permission is required. Allowing access does not promise a citation. OpenAI crawler documentation.
Bing and participating search engines
Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and investigate discovery and indexing. If your website platform supports IndexNow, it can notify participating engines about added, changed or removed URLs. Treat submission as a notification, not proof that a page has been indexed or selected for an answer. IndexNow setup.
Structured data
Use supported structured data to describe facts already visible on the page. For an eligible local business, that might include its identity, address and hours. Validate the implementation and correct errors. Structured data can help describe a page, but it does not guarantee a rich result or AI appearance. Invented ratings and services would make the information less trustworthy. Google’s LocalBusiness guidance.
Give people useful reasons to choose your business
Answer the decisions customers actually face. A rental company should explain collection arrangements, payment requirements and return conditions. A restaurant can explain booking, menu availability and access. A repair service can state the equipment it handles, service area and how a quote is calculated.
For example, a hypothetical bicycle workshop might replace “the best repairs in town” with: “We service commuter and road bicycles at our city-centre workshop. Book an inspection before bringing an electric bicycle; motor and battery work depends on the system.” That wording is useful only if it accurately describes the business. It is an illustration, not a case study or reported search result.
Show evidence appropriate to the claim: a current menu, a named qualification, an actual policy, an original demonstration or a dated service specification. Explain material limits. Do not turn customer reviews into claims of independently verified quality, and do not invent statistics or testimonials.
Make the next step easy. A reader should find the relevant booking link, request form or telephone number without guessing which location it belongs to. Review frequently changing facts on a schedule appropriate to the business, and update the date when substantive information has actually been checked.
If you do not have your own website
Maintain accurate information on eligible official business listings and on booking, marketplace or social pages customers use. Choose pages that provide a stable public identity and a practical way to contact you. Check whether their visibility and editing rules meet your needs.
You control the facts you submit, but the platform controls its template, access rules and much of its reporting. Ask what you can correct and what data you can obtain. A simple website you control can provide a durable home for detailed service information, although owning one still does not guarantee search visibility.
Physical premises, service-area businesses and online-only sellers have different eligibility rules and customer journeys. Do not assume every business needs the same local-listing strategy.
What a TopRatedPlaces profile can contribute
A TopRatedPlaces Featured Place is a paid public profile researched and written from verifiable business information, with factual approval before publication. The service can organize services, location or service area, practical questions and contact routes; a separate business website is not required. Its stated reporting covers tracked first-party profile views and outbound-link clicks. Those measures do not establish AI citations or customer revenue. Featured Place service.
Payment does not buy a higher editorial rank or inclusion in an independent ranking. A profile is one additional public source, and each search or AI provider decides whether to use it. No citation, recommendation, traffic or sale is guaranteed. Editorial policy.
Before paying, review the current plans, live Featured Places and the service’s value considerations against your own needs.
Measure what changes
Record a baseline before substantial edits, then compare similar periods. Keep a change log so you know when information, templates or access settings changed.
Google: Search Console’s Generative AI performance report currently shows organic impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, including page, country, device and date views. Low impressions or access rollout can explain a missing report. This is an impression report, not a complete record of mentions, clicks or inquiries. Continue using overall Search performance and site analytics alongside it. Generative AI performance report.
Bing: AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools reports citation activity across supported Microsoft Copilot, Bing and partner experiences. It includes cited URLs and sampled grounding queries. Citation counts do not show ranking or placement within an individual answer, and the report is not a census of all AI systems. Bing AI Performance.
Your business: track identifiable referral visits, completed inquiry forms, relevant calls and bookings where your systems support them. Keep attribution limits visible: some visits lack a useful referrer, people switch devices, and customers may encounter several sources before contacting you.
Manual checks can identify incorrect facts. Record the exact question, product, date, location and browsing context, then inspect the cited pages. A handful of prompts is a sample, not a reliable market-share measurement. A traffic change after an edit does not prove that the edit caused it.
| Action | Who controls it | How to check | Reasonable result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correct business and branch details | Business owner or listing manager | Compare public pages with the factual master record | Less contradictory information |
| Fix website access problems | Website administrator | Inspect affected URLs and crawler controls | Pages can be considered for discovery and indexing |
| Publish service conditions and contact routes | Business owner and editor | Read the page as a customer and test relevant links | A clearer basis for choosing and contacting the business |
| Review visibility and inquiries | Site owner and marketing team | Compare dated platform reports with inquiry records | Evidence for the next decision, with attribution limits |
Questions business owners ask
Can I pay to make ChatGPT recommend my business?
A payment to a directory or content service cannot guarantee an independent recommendation by ChatGPT. Assess a purchased service against its actual deliverables, such as producing and maintaining a factual page, rather than a promised position in an AI answer.
Do I need a special AI file or FAQ schema?
Google says no special machine-readable file or schema is required for its AI Search features. Use clear answers where they help customers, and apply structured data only when the page and business meet the relevant requirements. Other providers have their own rules; do not treat a Google requirement as universal.
How long will it take to appear?
There is no supported universal deadline. Fixing a page, submitting a URL or allowing a crawler does not set a timetable for indexing or selection. Measure what the platforms actually report and avoid promises of a citation within a fixed number of days.
What should I do first?
Choose the service or branch most important to your business. Correct its public facts, make its practical conditions and contact route clear, and check the page’s access and reporting. Use that completed review to decide what to improve next.
